EASTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Rep. Madeleine Dean is speaking out against the federal government shutdown, stating that Congress "failed its fundamental duty" to fund the government — a responsibility enshrined in the First Amendment.

"This failure to lead lies solely with the Republican majority," Dean said, adding that the GOP controls the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. "It is their duty to govern and craft a budget that supports our nation’s economic, physical, mental, and civic health. We Democrats have stood ready to do just that."

Dean said that three times this fiscal year, Congressional Republicans proposed a temporary budget in service of President Donald Trump, — who fomented the last government shutdown, the longest in the nation’s history, seven years ago.

The federal government shutdown started after the president and Congress failed to strike an agreement to keep government programs and services running by Wednesday’s deadline.

This development comes despite one Pennsylvania Democrat breaking ranks to support a short-term GOP-backed measure to fund the government through Nov. 21.

What Dean found "more appalling" about the government shutdown is the fact that House Republicans are nowhere to be seen, at home or on vacation.

"This is the failed leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson telling his members not to return to Washington," Dean said. "Now our military must serve without pay, essential federal agencies must work without adequate staffing, and our global standing is further diminished."

Dean said she is fighting to ensure that nearly 20,000 of her constituents don’t lose their healthcare as a result of Republicans’ cruel cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.

"I urge every one of my colleagues to fight for a budget that reflects our values — one that lowers costs; strengthens healthcare; and supports America’s families, businesses, and children," Dean said.
