Hazmat Team, Local Fire Co. Remove Overheating Chemical From Facility

The Edge Hill Fire Co. and the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety responded to a hazmat situation in Abington this weekend.

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — A county hazardous materials team had to assist a local fire department in this eastern Montgomery County community this past weekend after an emergency call came through for an overheating incident.

The Montgomery County Hazardous Materials Response Team came out Saturday morning to Abington Township to assist the Edge Hill Fire Company on a call at a local private facility that handles and supplies research materials, according to the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety.

The business was not identified by officials.

The DPS said that materials at the facility had overheated while they were in storage.

The nature of the types of materials that were affected was not released by the county.

Hazmat team personnel "made entry, removed the materials from the building, and packaged them for disposal," according to the DPS.

Meanwhile, the Edge Hill Fire Company offered a bit more information about the emergency call.

Upon entering the structure, fire crews discovered a smoldering chemical on a shelf that was creating a smokey condition that was eventually upgraded to a building fire call, according to the Edge Hill Fire Company.

It was then that the county hazmat team was called in to assist with mitigating the hazard, the fire company stated.

The Edge Hill Fire Company said that other nearby departments also assisted with the call. They were Abington Fire Company, Weldon Fire Company, Roslyn Fire Company, Glenside Fire Company, Second Alarmer's Association and Rescue Squad of Montgomery County, and the Abington Township Police Department.
