ABINGTON, PA — A pedestrian was critically injured during a Thursday afternoon crash outside of a local Wawa, the collision causing the young man to be taken to the hospital with serious head trauma.

The accident took place just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Susquehanna and Bradfield Roads in Abington Township's Roslyn section.

Two cars were traveling in opposite directions along Susquehanna when the eastbound vehicle made a left hand turn in front of the vehicle that was traveling westbound, causing the turning vehicle to hop a curb and strike the victim, who was standing on the corner waiting to cross the street, according to Abington Officer Al Freed, traffic safety manager and accident reconstructionist with the department.

Freed told Patch in an interview that the accident caused the roadway to be shut down for roughly three hours as emergency responders worked the scene.

The victim, who is believed to be around 20 or 21 years old, was rushed by ambulance to Abington Hospital where he is currently being treated for what is believed to be serious head trauma, Freed said.

Freed, who has been with the Abington Police Department for 35 years, said the accident was "up there" in terms of severity that he has witnessed during his career.

Freed said that while a preliminary investigation showed that the eastbound car may have been at fault for making the lefthand turn in front of the other driver, it is not yet clear whether or not that driver would face any charges or be cited for the possible violation.

Investigators are still determining whether anything like speed on the part of the other driver may have played a factor, and Freed said it's too early to say whether anyone involved would receive citations or be charged.

"That part of it is still under investigation," Freed said.

Freed said the drivers were treated at the scene for minor injuries, but neither of them needed to go to the hospital.

Freed said he had not yet checked with the hospital as of the time of the publication of this story Friday morning to get an updated patient condition on the victim, so it is still unclear whether or not the young man is expected to survive his injuries.
