Strong Gas Odor Reported In Cheltenham

​Cheltenham Township Emergency Management has received reports Thursday from the odor. Officials said it's from a gas main in Philadelphia.

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —Cheltenham Township Emergency Management is getting reports of a "strong odor of gas" in the township.

But that odor is not coming from the SPS Technologies fire from last week. It's due to a gas main being struck in the area of 18th & Olney in Philadelphia on Thursday morning.

Philadelphia Gas Works said it responded at 8:25 a.m. Thursday to the report of a private contractor that struck a natural gas main near 18th Street and Olney Avenue.

PGW is on-site along with other emergency responders and is working to make the area safe.

No injuries have been reported.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Philadelphia Fire Department has evacuated individuals in the area. Once the location is deemed safe, they will be allowed to return. At this time, it is not yet clear if customers will experience service disruptions.

Cheltenham Police said there is no need to call the police station or 911 to report the odor.
