Susquehanna ... Open

Susquehanna Road, near the corner of Maple Avenue, is now open following a three-month flood-mitigating project.

Abington Township Engineer Michael Powers said last May that crews were creating a “box culvert” over Sandy Run Creek.

The 10-foot by 6-foot concrete box culvert will divert rainwater under the road. Powers said the bridge in place now at the creek is not good at handling the "100-year-storm."

Neshaminy Constructors won the bid. Last May, Powers said the project would cost a shade under $800,000. The state contributed 80 percent, and the township pitched in the rest by using fund balance and through the Supplemental Federal-Aid Bridge Project Reimbursement Agreement.

In May, Abington Commissioner Thomas Bowman said that the closure of the arterial road would cause “Armageddon in Roslyn” due to the increased traffic.

Original estimates said the work would be done in September.
