Winners of Tied Abington Races Could be Determined By Tuesday

County spokesman Frank Custer said the races in Wards 3 and 4 in Abington would not be determined by the end of Friday.

Abington is still looking for the winners of two races that ended in a tie on Tuesday night.

According to Montgomery County’s unofficial election results, the race for Abington’s Ward 3 Commissioner between incumbent Republican Lawrence Jones and Democratic challenger and former Abington Commissioner Michael O’Connor ended in a tie at 510 votes.

The race between Republican Pamela Vasserman and Democrat Jimmy DiPlacido for Ward 4 also ended in a tie at 517 votes.

Custer said people are still officially counting the votes in a county warehouse that houses voting machines.

“Two Democrats and one Republican — which reflects the makeup of the county — are methodically sitting at each table and going through the paper tapes from each voting machine, each absentee ballot and each military ballot,” Custer said late Friday afternoon. “Attorneys and witnesses are watching as well. When they’re done with one municipality, they’ll go on to the next.”

The counting is usually broken up by school district.

Custer said he heard from someone today who said the Abington’s two elections would not be decided before at least Tuesday.

And should either race end in a tie after the official count?

It might come down to a coin toss, the casting of lots or the rolling of dice on Nov. 22, Custer said.

“The solicitor’s office is still determining what method will be used should there be a tie,” Custer said.
