PA Weather: Thunderstorms In Father’s Day Weekend Forecast

Damaging winds, power outages and quarter-sized hail are all possible as another round of storms are set to hit PA Friday.

PENNSYLVANIA - Severe weather, including damaging winds, power outages and quarter-sized hail are possible in the Keystone State as storms begin to roll into the region for Father’s Day weekend, forecasters say.

Showers are already inundating the state Friday morning with up to 2 inches of rain reported in the middle of the state, according to the National Weather Service, with the possibility of thunderstorms to begin around noon. The primary threat of severe weather will be between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

“Stay alert for potential tree damage, powerline issues & large hail,” the National Weather Service Mount Holly station said in a statement via Twitter Friday morning.

While South Jersey and Delaware is expected to see the most effects of the Friday storms, with short-lived and/or non-widespread isolated intense storms possible south of I-95, isolated severe thunderstorms are still possible in the southeast part of Pennsylvania, the weather service said.

As of Friday morning, a hazardous weather outlook is in effect for 11 Pennsylvania counties due to potential minor coastal flooding through Saturday. The affected counties are:

"Locally heavy showers and scattered strong thunderstorms will impact the region during the late morning and afternoon hours today," the weather service said. "Some of the storms will be accompanied by gusty winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning and perhaps small hail. Ponding of water in low lying areas and rapid rises in some small streams could also occur."

A flood advisory is also in effect until 10 a.m. Friday morning in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset counties.

On Saturday, the likelihood for thunderstorms will return after 8 a.m., though the afternoon should see partly sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service.

The silver lining: Father's Day is expected to see sunny skies in Pennsylvania with highs in the high 70s and low 80s, forecasters said.

South Jersey:

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds. High near 80. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1am. Patchy fog before 4 a.m., then patchy fog after 5 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A slight chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 81. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 83. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 57.
