📰 News we're reading

1. Boil water notice issued after water main break in Altoona (wtaj.com) — Select Altoona residents near the 500 block of Logan Boulevard are being urged to boil their water as a precaution after a water main break, due to possible contamination. The Altoona Water Authority is testing the water, will send phone alerts when it’s safe again, and will post updates on its website over the next few days.

2. Experts warn against impulsive holiday pet adoptions (wtaj.com) — Altoona-area families thinking about a Christmas puppy or kitten are being urged to weigh the long-term costs and responsibilities before adopting. Central PA Humane Society staff explain why returns spike after the holidays and spotlight several older pets still waiting for homes, encouraging residents to consider these overlooked animals and plan applications early if they hope to adopt around Christmas.

3. Discover Blair County tourism agency hires Koziar as director (altoonamirror.com) — Blair County’s new tourism agency, Discover Blair County, has hired WTAJ host Morgan Koziar as its first operations and marketing director, a move that will shape how Altoona and nearby communities are promoted to visitors. The hire follows the defunding of Explore Altoona earlier this year after disagreements over tourism strategy, and Koziar will now lead efforts to market local attractions, lodging, and businesses starting February 2026.

4. Luigi Mangione: One Year After the Arrest That Shocked the Nation (mebaneenterprise.com) — Altoona plays a key role in this ongoing national case, as patrons and police at a local McDonald’s helped capture a suspect now facing murder and weapons charges in New York and federal court. One year later, Altoona officers are testifying in Manhattan about their warrantless backpack search, while judges weigh what evidence can be used as the high‑profile prosecution moves forward.

5. State's 3-pointers overwhelm AAHS boys basketball team (altoonamirror.com) — Altoona Area High School’s boys basketball team suffered a lopsided 73-29 home loss to State College, which buried 12 three-pointers and pulled away early at the Fieldhouse. Coach Doug Pfeffer said Altoona must defend the perimeter better, while Chris Wagner led the Mountain Lions with 11 points as they fell to 0-4 ahead of Friday’s road trip to Central Dauphin East.
