DA: Hearing to Certify Alleged Rapist Can Be Charged as Adult

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman announced a hearing will be held July 17 to certify that the 16-year-old boy can be charged as an adult in the April 29 rape that occurred in the Wissahickon High School auditorium.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman announced Wednesday that the Commonwealth has been granted a hearing in July to certify the 16-year-old alleged rapist can be charged as an adult in the Wissahickon High School sexual assault.

Ferman and Lower Gwynedd Township Police Chief Paul D. Kenny said criminal offenses were filed against the teen on April 30, charging him with felony rape, involuntary deviate sexual assault and other offenses.

Ferman said the teen was walking with the 15-year-old alleged female victim on April 29 in the school, when he allegedly forcibly attacked her.

The rape occurred in the school auditorium and caused serious injuries that required surgery.

Ferman said a petition was filed May 16 with the Montgomery County Juvenile Court, and a hearing has been granted for July 17.

The case will be prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Abidiwan-Lupo.
