West Ambler Streetscape Construction to Begin This Summer

Improvements will be made to West Maple and Oak streets and Mt. Pleasant Ave.

A $270,000 streetscape project in West Ambler will begin this summer, Whitpain Township consultants announced at Monday's West Ambler Revitalization meeting.

Peter M. Simone, of Simone Collins Landscape Architecture, announced that sidewalks and curbing will be added or improved on W. Maple and Oak streets and Mt. Pleasant Avenue, and a crosswalk will be created at W. Maple and Oaks streets.

According to Simone, consultants were asked initially to look only at W. Maple Street.

“After discussions with the community it became apparent that the connection from Maple up to what is a school bus stop at Mt. Pleasant was very important, so we added to the scope,” Simone said.

The improvements will provide a “safe place to walk” for kids getting off the bus at the corner of Railroad Ave and Mt. Pleasant Ave.

As a result of the additional improvements, the $190,000 grant previously obtained by the township will not cover the entire project, expected to cost up to $280,000.

Simone said there was an option to do the project in phases, with the priority being Mt. Pleasant Ave. improvements.

“It seemed to us that the Mt. Pleasant section was a priority, and making the connection on W. Maple,” Simone said. “Whether we can do both sides of Maple with the money we have presently, we’re not sure about that.”

Supervisor Anthony Greco said he wanted to complete the entire project at one time.

“I think what we want to do is bid it to include alternates, hopefully the bids come in and we can do all of the work that’s show in with the money we have left from the grant,” Township Manager Roman Pronczak said.  “There probably isn’t enough do everything. We’ll have to see how much we’re short, and we can go back to the supervisors and see if money can be shifted.”
