B-W Trivia: Who Was the Losing Team?

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past.

 and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures.

Here is this week's question:

Baseball has been a national pastime and a local treasure, including its long and proud history in the Baldwin area.

What many people may not realize today is how well-organized and how popular the sport was in its earliest days.

Consider this quote: "The old-time baseball fan never tires of lauding the deeds of the diamond heroes. They are just as clever in handling the ball and bat as are those of the present day."

These words, which accurately describe the feelings of today's most ardent fans, appeared in the Sept. 19, 1912, edition of the Hill Top Record. The article was written about the pioneer amateur teams of Pittsburgh's South Hills area.

At that time, semi-professional teams were springing up all over the place. Each neighborhood had a team, and two of them are pictured above: the Becks Run team (left, circa 1907) and the Coal Valley Athletic Club (right, circa 1914).

One of these semi-pro Baldwin-area squads defeated a famous and historic team.
