Plans For First Pittsburgh Meijer Store Progress

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — The opening of Pennsylvania's first Meijer store is a step closer to reality.
Cranberry supervisors recently approved land development grant and conditional use approval legislation for Henderson Crossing, 45-acre mixed use development in the northeast corner of Route 228 and Franklin Road near North Catholic High School.
The site will contain multiple apartment buildings and restaurants and be anchored by the 159,000 square-foot Meijer superstore.

A Forbes profile oft the chain states that Meijer is a family-owned grocery chain operating in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Its supercenter stores offer groceries but also have departments such as fashion, automotive, home decor, health and beauty care, pharmacy, electronics and banking.
“Our expansion into this market reflects our commitment to serving more customers with fresh, affordable groceries, one-stop shopping, and outstanding service,” the company said in a statement when plans for the project first were announced in September. “We look forward to introducing ourselves to these communities and are committed to being an active and engaged neighbor."

While there is no firm opening date set yet, construction of the superstore is expected to begin in 2026.
Meijer will compete with another new grocery store entry into the Pittsburgh market: Wegmans, which is going to build its own store on 13 acres near Cool Springs Drive in the Cranberry Springs development .
Wegmans will feature a produce department, a wide variety of seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese options, and a large selection of wine and beer.
