Holy Family Women Hoopsters Shoot to No. 18

Six straight wins aid the Tigers cause.

PHILADELPHIA — The Holy Family University women’s basketball team is ranked second in the NCAA Division II East Region Poll for the third straight week as announced by the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee.

According to a release, the regional polls help determine the field for the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament in March.

Holy Family, ranked 18th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches’ Poll, jumped three spots in this week’s national poll after being ranked 21st a week ago.  The Tigers are ranked second in the East Region behind Bentley University of the Northeast-10 Conference.

Holy Family recorded its sixth straight victory Thursday night against Georgian Court University defeating the Lions by the score of 84-41.  It was a record setting night as the win marked the 100th career victory for head coach Mark Miller and senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) moved into third place on the all-time scoring list.

Carr led the Holy Family offense with a game-high 19 points after shooting 8-of-12 from the field.  Her performance moved her ahead of Stephanie Daniels (1995-1999) on the all-time scoring list.  Daniels scored 1,801 points during her career.  Carr currently has 1,818 career points and is only three points away from moving into second place on the all-time scoring list with Kim Burski (1,821; 1995-1999).  In addition, she is the fourth player in program history to score over 1,800 career points. This season, Carr is averaging 15.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game and is ranked among the conference leaders in all three categories.

Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil’s) tallied 14 points as she shot 5-of-8 from the field, including two three-pointers. Sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) chipped in ten points to go along with five rebounds and five blocked shots. Senior Lindsey Tennett (Perkasie, Pa./Pennrdige) added seven points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Tigers in the victory over Georgian Court.

Mann is averaging 12.7 points to go along with 7.0 rebounds per game this season.  She also has collected 27 steals and has recorded 30 blocked shots.  Both of which are new career highs for her.  Thompson is averaging 11.6 points per contest and is ranked among the conference leaders in three-point shooting.  Thompson has knocked down 33 three-pointers this season and is shooting .458-percent from beyond the arc.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Tigers visit Post University for a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
