Nottingham Fire Says Goodbye to Station Mascot

The fire department had to put down Smokey the Dog over the weekend because of complications from diabetes.

The members of the Nottingham Fire Department had to make a tough, but necessary decision Friday night.

After fighting a painful battle against canine diabetes, station mascot Smokey the Dog had to be put down Saturday at the VCA Animal Hospital in Trevose, according to a post on the station's Facebook page. A lovable member of the firehouse for the past 13 years, old age and the illness was causing too much suffering for Smokey.

"Smokey, like Roofy and Tiller before him, have taught many a school kid how to do stop drop and roll," the post said. "Smoke loved walking in the Memorial Day parade, visiting 7-11, terrorizing neighbors' lawns and visiting the kids at recess up at Samuel K Faust. Rest easy pal , thanks for the memories and take your place along side the others from the NFD who have gone before you."

According to 6ABC.com, the firefighters served up one more steak dinner before Smokey's trip to the veterinarian.
