On Friday, Feb. 18, Ned Hector, an African American Revolutionary War soldier portrayed by Noah Lewis will visit the eighth grade classes of Mrs. Clearkin and Mr. Linehan at Cecelia Snyder Middle School, 3330 Hulmeville Road.
Hector was a teamster and artilleryman and fought at the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He was cited for his courage during the retreat from Brandywine when he refused to let his team wagon and armaments fall into enemy hands.
The students will learn the steps needed to load and shoot a cannon. They will also learn about the fear that soldiers experienced as the enemy advanced upon their position in the field of battle.
Mr. Lewis also will emphasize the contributions of many African Americans during the American Revolution. These important sacrifices have contributed to the freedoms that we as Americans enjoy today.
The Just for the Kids Foundation and Mrs. Gormish are responsible for the funding of this wonderful presentation.
