Whiz Kids: Science Academy Winners

The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science was held on Feb. 25 at Bensalem High School. Local schools had plenty of winners.

Accomplishment: The 69th annual Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) regional competition was held last month at Bensalem High School.  Students from Philadelphia and Bucks County presented their independent scientific research to professional scientists and educators in this regional fair.  The topics ranged from botany to physics. Forty-seven Bensalem High School students presented their scientific research at the competition.

Dev Amin received a perfect score and 33 students scored high enough to go on to the state level competition. Those students are: Dev Amin, Dhruti Patel, Bhaumik Shah, Michael Pinto, Neil Shah, Neel Parikh, Priyanka Patel, Ahmed Chaudhry, Sunny Nahar, Shawn Shaji, Eshita Shah, Emily O’Driscoll, Sumit Pareek, Abhinav Sundaresan, Tatyana Keshanech, Shreya Patel, Anthony Ho, Anjili Patel, Olivia Gamache, Tiffany Ho, Kajol Shah, Bhavya Ancha, Anish Shah, Muzzammil Shaik, Rimaaz Wali, Amelia Ali, Krina Patel, Parth Patel, Eva Chau, Anika Patel, Kaitlyn D’Aguanno, Sasha Thomas, Parth Zalavadia. The second place participants were: Alisha Parekh, Rachel Zachariah, Kathryn Ching, Ami Rao, Pooja Panchal, Jue Patel, Saumil Shah, Ozichi Osuoha, Niti Patel, Deepa Patel, Rup Zalavadia, Nauman Javed, Alay Shah, Pooja Tilvawala.

In the Middle School Division, 19 Robert K. Shafer Middle School students participated. These 18 first place award winners will proceed to the state level of competition: Allissa Bachman, Sophie Corso, Stephanie Dicks, Margaret Doyle, Jason Gruzin, Dylan Hansbury, Joely Lawless, Darby Mac Adams, Luke Metz, Ankur Nahar, Raj B. Patel, and Parth Shroff.   Natalie Gormley, Amy Ma, Anjali Patel, Hetvi Patel, Rohan Parikh, Emily Redhouse, and Anish Thakur are the seventh grade first place winners. Seventh grader Dwayne Hamilton received a second place and will also attend the state competition as a technician (time keeper).

There were 12 Cecelia Snyder Middle School students who participated with eight receiving first place awards.  The winners are eighth graders: Michael Peagler, Jerry Potts, Krishna Patel, Gagan Sureja, Shivani Patel, Lauren Fie, Brianna Carson, and Elaina Derricks. Seventh grader Matt Garfield and eighth graders Teresa Lee, Alison Silano, and Vidhi Patel received second place awards and will be technicians at the State competition.
