'Concealed' Gun on Broad Street Leads to Charges

Arrested man and police differ on whether the semi-automatic pistol in his possession was hidden.

A man with a gun was having a confrontation with a woman on E. Broad Street and the woman was screaming.

That’s what callers told city police around 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Then police learned the man and woman got into a black 2011 Dodge Charger and drove away.

Police were able to intercept the car at Center and E. Goepp streets. Then they readied a “high-risk vehicle stop.”

The man emerged from the driver’s seat, apparently without a gun. The incident ended safely.

But the man, Glendale Carney, 40, of 629 Center St., Apt. 2, in the city was charged because of the gun—a Kel Tec 9mm Luger, loaded with a 10-round magazine.

The charge was firearms not to be carried without a license. Police said Carney concealed the semiautomatic firearm in the car’s center console within his immediate reach.

Carney admitted to police there was a gun in the car, but he claimed it was not concealed because it was in his waistband and could be seen from behind, court records say.

Carney concluded that he did not need—nor did he have—a permit to carry a concealed firearm.

But police did not accept Carney’s claim and stuck by the “without a license” charge—a level-one misdeameanor.

They also charged him with possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use, possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked.

The alleged paraphernalia included a plastic baggie, a lighter and four small circular metal mesh screens commonly used for smoking marijuana, according to a criminal complaint filed by city Officer Wade B. Haubert Jr.

The woman also was detained, but the complaint does not identify her or say if she was charged.

An information sheet in Carney’s file says he works for a Bethlehem paving company and lists a woman as his wife. It also says police removed a shotgun from his home.

He was arraigned later Monday night by on-duty District Judge Robert Hawke of Lehigh Township and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail.
