Musikfest Highlights: August 8

The Headliner: The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue is a supergroup featuring Donald Fagen of Steely Dan; Michael McDonald, formerly of the Doobie Brothers, and Boz Scaggs. It figures to be an auditory feast for those who love the soft rock sounds of the 1970s. Tickets at $43 and $33 are still available. Gates open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 8.

The Highlight: Country music is not typically a big part of the Musikfest repertoire. Today that changes at Plaza Tropical with a whole day of live country, starting at noon and culminating with Allentown’s own Scott Marshall & Marshall’s Highway at 7 p.m. and Connor Christian & Southern Gothic at 9:15.

For the Little Ones: It’s time for the circus at the Peeps & Company Banana Island Craft Tent. Rides, games and an assortment of kids activities are available with live music by Miss Maggie Sings, Fuzzy Lollipop and 2+1 Math Rocks!

The Classical Musikfest: The Abaca String Band (Vesper Concert Series, 5 p.m., ) is a string quintet of guitar, mandolin, violin, viola and double bass from New York City and making a return trip to the festival because it has been so popular. How Fair A Sound, with flute, harp and vocals, is the Chamber Series concert at 7:30 p.m. in the .

Mary Ellen’s Celtic Corner: The Killdares, from that hotbed of Celtic music – Dallas, Texas – “blend traditional Celtic playing skills, power pop accessibility and straight up rock 'n’ roll hooks” at Volksplatz at 9 p.m.

The Best of the Free Platzes: , which was The Highlight of our , takes its show to South Bethlehem and tonight. The band will parade from the Sands Steel Stage to the east end of SteelStacks starting at 7 p.m. M4 then takes the Americaplatz stage at 9:30 p.m. Boom Chick (TD Bank Community Stage in front of the ArtsQuest Center, 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.) is a drum and guitar duo that – much like the White Stripes – owes a lot of its sound to early American rock 'n’ roll and country blues. Gas House Gorillas (KNBT Jazz Cabaret Stage inside the ArtsQuest Center, 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) is also a throwback – to rockabilly, swing and jump blues – the music that spawned rock 'n’ roll.
