New Job Training Programs Coming to NCC

Northampton Community College getting $1 million to help train veterans, laid off and underemployed workers in four "high-demand" fields.

 

A $1 million grant from the United States Department of Labor will enable to offer four new non-credit diplomas to help veterans, laid-off or underemployed workers and others receive accelerated training to enter high-wage, high-demand jobs.

Men and women interested in starting classes in August must attend an information session from 1-3 p.m. on June 12 or July 2 in Hartzell Hall on Northampton’s Main Campus at 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem.

They may choose to specialize in machinery repair, geo-thermal heat pumps, electrical construction, or air conditioning and refrigeration, all of which are considered high-demand fields in Pennsylvania.

The programs can be completed in one year or less. They include hands-on instruction by faculty with industry experience and a “Foundations in Trades” course to introduce participants for the skills needed in today’s fast-paced manufacturing and renewable energy fields. Each student will also have the opportunity to work with a career coach.

The cost of the program is about $5000, but many individuals are expected to qualify for tuition assistance from public funds administered through Pennsylvania Career Link.

The grant is part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program.
