Bryn Mawr Film Institute: September at a Glance

This month brings a new film series, a baseball-centric evening and the first opera of the season.

September brings a new "What's Up, Doc?" film series to the , co-sponsored . This month also brings the first opera of the season and a screening of Kevin Smith's new movie Red State, complete with a Skype Q-and-A session with Smith. The main event, though, is a dinner with the Philadelphia Phillies' chairman and part owner Bill Giles, which will also feature a screening of the baseball film The Natural, starring Robert Redford.

Open Screen Monday (9:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12)

Open Screen Monday is a monthly free event during which any aspiring filmmakers can submit films in DVD or VHS format and watch films for free. The event is typically held the first Monday of each month but was pushed back a week because of the Labor Day holiday.  

Young @ Heart (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13)

This is the first screening in BMFI’s “What’s Up, Doc?” film series this fall, which is being co-sponsored by Bryn Mawr Hospital. Physicians from Bryn Mawr Hospital and from Main Line Health will be introducing films—some classics and some newer releases—that have something to do with medical issues. The introductions typically will last between 10 and 15 minutes and will give the audience something to think about during the screening.

Young @ Heart is a documentary about a choir of senior citizens from New England that performs music by the likes of Sonic Youth, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown, and it will be introduced by a physician from Main Line Health. 

Phillies at the Movies: Close Up with Bill Giles (6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15)

This event begins at 6 p.m. with a dinner with Bill Giles, chairman and part owner of the Philadelphia Phillies. Giles, who has been with the Phillies since the 1960s, will talk about past and present seasons. A screening of the Robert Redford film “The Natural” will screen at 7:30. Non-BMFI members can purchase tickets for the event for $100, and BMFI members can purchase tickets for $90 here. Those who do not attend the dinner may still attend the screening of “The Natural” at 7:30 p.m. at regular cost. 

Red State (10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25)

Kevin Smith’s new film Red State, starring Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, John Goodman and Michael Parks, will be screened at 10 p.m. The horror movie is about a group of teenagers who respond to an online invitation for sex and are captured by fundamentalists. The $20 screening will also feature a Skype Q-and-A session with Kevin Smith, who also directed such films as Clerks and Chasing Amy.

Children of Men (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27)

The second in BMFI’s “What’s Up, Doc?” film series, this movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron is about mankind being threatened by infertility in the not-so-distant future, and Clive Owen’s character is charged with transporting a woman who’s managed to conceive to safety. This screening will be introduced by Dr. Michael Glassner, a fertility specialist at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Glassner is also on staff at Lankenau and Paoli hospitals.

Live Simulcast: Faust (2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28)

The first of BMFI’s opera simulcasts for the season will be simulcast live from the Royal Operahouse in London. This Gounod opera is in French with English subtitles and is the classic tale of Faust, who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for power. The opera is conducted by Evelino Pido and stars Vittorio Grigolo and Rene Pape.
