Crash Lands Two in Hospital, Shuts Down Part of Montgomery Ave.

A crash that landed two men in the hospital also shut down a portion of Montgomery Avenue in Bryn Mawr early Sunday morning, according to a Lower Merion Police Department press release.

Around 2:39 a.m. Sunday, a Volvo with two passengers veered off of Montgomery Avenue between Roberts Road and N Merion Avenue, striking a utility pole and continuing on to strike a large tree, police said. The crash left one utility pole “completely down on Montgomery Avenue, and a second utility pole was sheared in half and dangling above the westbound lanes of Montgomery Avenue,” the release states.

The Bryn Mawr Fire Department rescued the driver, who was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, police said. The 21-year-old driver is stable but listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery for a head injury, the release states.

A 20-year-old passenger was also transported to HUP, but his injuries appear to be minor, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, but police said one factor looks to be excessive speed.

PECO was notified of the downed poles. The release, issued around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, states that Montgomery Avenue, between North Roberts Road and North Merion Avenue is completely shut down until all repairs can be made.
