The boy was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon.

A 12-year-old Canonsburg boy was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle on Highfield Avenue.

Canonsburg police said the boy was riding a skateboard down the road with other children when he was struck around 6:15 p.m. by a car being driven by Michelle Stacko of Cecil.

While police and fire personnel had originally been told the boy was stuck underneath the front of the car, nearby residents had helped free him prior to their arrival.

According to a police report, the boy underwent surgery for a fractured femur. He also suffered a burn and laceration on his ankle. He had two stitches in his lip and also had several abrasions.

His mother told police that he was expected to be in the hospital for several days to recover from his injuries.

Interviewed later, Stacko said that the boy had come down the hill on his skateboard and "when she hit the brakes it was too late."

Canonsburg police Chief R.T. Bell on Monday said the incident is still under investigation.
