Fatal Crash Closes Interstate 79

At least one person died when a car crashed into a gasoline tanker near the Bridgeville rest stop.

Interstate 79 was shut down late Thursday night after one person was killed when a car crashed into a gasoline tanker truck near the Bridgeville rest stop, an Allegheny County 911 dispatcher said.

The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday when the car and tanker collided in the southbound lanes of I-79 in South Fayette.

State police shut down the roadway and hazardous material crews were called to the scene to clean up the leaking fuel. There was no information on who was killed or the condition of the other driver.

Police were detouring cars onto the Bridgeville exit to avoid the crash scene.
