Police Say Driver Who Nearly Struck Cruiser to be Charged With DUI

Canonsburg police said a borough man had a blood-alcohol content of .217 percent Saturday.

Canonsburg police charged a borough man with driving under the influence after observing him operate his vehicle “erratically” and then almost strike an officer’s cruiser Saturday.

Police said they observed a silver Mercedes driven by Charles Shaver, of 314 Summit Ave., turn right on Crawford “with difficulty almost striking my police cruiser,” the officer said in the incident report.

The officer followed the vehicle as it traveled down Crawford, noting it to “be driven in the middle of the street and weaving from right to left.”

That’s when Shaver turned the vehicle left on Orchard, “making a wide turn almost going off the road.”

The officer then activated his overhead lights and sounded an audible warning. But the report indicated that Shaver failed to pull over for another 100 yards.

When approached, officers said a strong odor of alcohol was emanating from Shaver, whose eyes were reportedly glassy and whose mechanical skills were reportedly sluggish.

Police said Shaver admitted he was drinking before submitted to several field sobriety tests and ultimately a breath test. That test showed the man had a blood-alcohol content of .217—which is over the legal limit.

Charges of driving under the influence will proceed by summons, police said.
