Spotlight: Canon-McMillan School District Recognizes Athletes, Academic Achievers

The following students and athletes were honored by the board and administration this month.

Canon-McMillan School board and the administration recognized the following athletes and academic achievers this month:

  • The varsity high school wrestling team was recognized for its record of 19 wins and no losses, and for being Section 4 champions, PIAA team dual champs, PIAA Southwest Regional champs, PIAA individual tournament champs and the Reno, Nevada Tournament of Champions champs. Cody Wiercioch, Conner Schram and Solomon Chisko were recognized as PIAA champions. Dalton Macri was recognized for a second-place finish, while Alex Campbell was recognized for his eighth-place finish. Chris Mary was recognized for being named WPIAL and PIAA Head Coach of the Year.
  • Natalie Cummings, an eighth-grade student at Canonsburg Middle School, was congratulated for winning the 63rd Western Pennsylvania Spelling Bee Competition held at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh on March 23. Cummings earned a spot in the competition by winning the Canonsburg Middle School spelling bee, and then later winning the regional spelling bee. She will now move on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition later this year.
  • The Mathcounts team from Canonsburg Middle School was recognized for taking second place at the local Mathcounts competition at Washington & Jefferson College. The team also received an award for most-improved school. Ten students represented the school: Anthony Popovski, Nick Self, Heather Robinson, Rachel Bowman, Draven Bechtel, William Cocheneur, Collin Kelly, Maggie Veres, Lauren Hodges and Kripa George. The winning team consisted of Popovski, Self, Robinson and Bowman. Special recognition was given to Bechtel, who was ranked 10th in the individual competition and participated in the final Countdown Round. Sponsor Randy Clonan was recognized for doing a "wonderful job with the kids each and every year."
