Police: School Bus Driver Didn't Have Insurance

The owner of a company contracted to do substitute bus driving for faces numerous charges after state police said he didn’t have insurance while driving students for nearly five months.

Michael N. Krawec, 25, of Pittsburgh, did not have proper insurance when troopers say his company made 160 bus runs for Chartiers Valley from Dec. 7 to April 25.

According to a Pennsylvania State Police press release, an anonymous caller alerted troopers at the Moon Township barracks to the situation on April 9. Later that month, investigators went to the company’s bus depot in Baldwin and found an insurance card that was supposed to cover all Chartiers Valley buses that expired on Oct. 5.

Troopers said they later learned from the Chartiers Valley Transportation Department that Kraweck, who owns and operates Krawec Transit of Pittsburgh, made 160 runs after his insurance was canceled.

Although investigators said Krawec’s insurance expired in October, school officials said any students on those bus rides were still covered by the district’s liability insurance.

"All Chartiers Valley students were covered by the district's insurance during the time they were transported by (Krawec) Transit," school district spokeswoman Kara Droney said.

State police charged him with 160 counts of driving without required financial responsibility and one count each of records tampering, insurance fraud, false swearing and tampering with public records, among other charges. The charges were filed last week at the office of .
