Spencer Stefko has resigned from his position as the Chartiers Valley Lady Colts basketball coach, according to The Almanac.

Stefko submitted his resignation to Chartiers Valley’s athletic director Frank Vulcano Jr. on Friday stating he thought a new person was needed to coach the girls’ basketball team, according to The Almanac.

The decision is puzzling because it comes on the heels of a season in which the Lady Colts advanced to the WPIAL championship game for the first time in school history. The girls lost to Bethel Park in the championship game.

Stefko’s announcement also comes nearly two years after the Chartiers Valley School Board removed him as head coach, although the school district reversed its decision three weeks later and reinstated him as coach.

“There is nothing negative in this decision,” Stefko wrote in his resignation letter. “Just a desire that the kids get the best person for the job.”
