CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA— A Seneca Valley School District student-run fundraiser has generated more than $11,000 for performing arts initiatives. The fundraiser, "Risings Stars of Seneca Valley," was the brainchild of senior Annika Batavia.

The intent was to address the growing need for expanded curriculum options and increased opportunities within the performing arts offerings at Seneca Valley - especially for elementary-level students. Over the past several months, Batavia organized and led the fundraising campaign to generate donations to support her goal of raising $10,000. She topped her goal by $1,000.

Batavia also ran two week-long summer camps for underprivileged students ages 8-11 that provided an opportunity to learn more about musical theater and encouraged creativity, confidence and teamwork. At the end of each camp, students performed on stage in front of their families and friends.

"Musical theater has provided me with a supportive community and has allowed me to be myself,” Batavia said. “I am so happy I was able to share that with the kids in my camp, and I'm excited to transition this camp to the elementary schools. Getting kids involved at an early age will help them discover their talents and passion and help easily transition to the opportunities available in the high school.”

Annie Mersing, development director of the Seneca Valley Foundation, said the organization is proud of Batavia's dedication to enhancing performing arts in the district.

“Her initiative not only raised substantial funds but also demonstrated the power of student leadership and community collaboration," Mersing said. "This contribution will have a lasting impact, providing our students with more opportunities to explore and excel in the performing arts.”

The $11,000 raised will help expand opportunities for elementary students through afterschool or summer programs, offering a more diverse and enriched performing arts education.
