CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — By winning Chatham University's Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award, Seneca Valley senior Gretchen Kellar has been offered a $5,000 annual renewable university scholarship. She also will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a special edition of Carson's seminal work, "Silent Spring."

The Carson Award honors Chatham alumna and famous environmentalist Rachel Carson, who graduated from the university in 1929. It's presented to one student from each high school across the country who is committed to improving the environment and their community through sustainability.

Kellar was nominated for the award last school year by her biology teacher, Dana Hadley.
