Longtime Pittsburgh Radio Personality Dies
He spent decades on the airwaves at various Pittsburgh stations.
BROOKLINE, PA — Tony Mowod, who championed jazz for decades while hosting shows on numerous Pittsburgh radio stations, has died. His death was announced on WZUM-AM and FM, where Mr. Mowod most recently hosted a program.
Mr. Mowod, of Brookline, was 85.
"He was a friend, leader, colleague and one of the best jazz radio broadcasters, ever," a post on WZUM's website stated. "The rich tradition of jazz he shepherded for Pittsburgh will continue for years and years to come."

According to the website of Public Radio Tulsa, with which Mr. Mowod also was affiliated, he began his broadcasting career at the former WDUQ-FM, the station at Duquesne University where he was a student. He also worked locally for WAZZ, WTAE, WKPA, WYDD and WAMO.
He appeared in off-Broadway theatrical productions and performances with the the Pittsburgh Playhouse, Pittsburgh Children's Theater, and Duquesne University's Red Masquers.

Mr. Mowod also was an American Federation of Jazz Societies board member.
WZUM said that Mr. Mowod had recorded programs in advance for the station that will be aired in the near future.
Mr. Mowod was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, who died last month.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
