Bisignani, Madden Sworn in Monday

Two Dormont police officers were sworn in to new positions Monday, and Dormont residents said "goodbye" to their long-time police chief.

Police Sgt. Michael Bisignani was sworn in as the new Chief of Dormont Police, filling the position of former Chief Phil Ross, who retired March 3.

Officer Tom Madden was sworn in as police sergeant, filling Bisignani's former position. Council plans to hire an additional patrolman at a later date.

Former Chief Ross also was recognized Monday, when Mayor Tom Lloyd presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his 29 years of service with the Dormont Police Department.

"We certainly are sorry to see Phil Ross step down as chief, but glad to see that when he stepped down, he was the chief," Lloyd said. "He didn’t deserve what happened in the past few years, and I'm glad council thought enough to reinstate him as chief. We will miss him, and I will miss him."

Lloyd said Bisignani will be reviewing all policies of the police department and updating them as needed. He already has met with staff in the Keystone Oaks School District, and Dormont Elementary School specifically, to review safety plans for the schools.

"Chief Bisignani will be a busy guy," Lloyd said. "We're looking forward to working with him. Good luck and God Bless."
