**Maker: Gatty of London**
This is a very rare late 18th-century mahogany stick barometer crafted by the renowned maker James Gatty. The scale features typical weather indications, ranging from "Stormy" to "Very Dry." The maker's name is engraved at the top of the scale: James Gatty of Cambridge, England. Additionally, the barometer includes exquisitely engraved flowers and foliage.
The thermometer scale is dated to the late 1780s. The cabinet work is superbly constructed and well-proportioned, featuring an architectural top finished with a central brass acorn finial.
James Gatty was one of the earliest Italian barometer makers, beginning his work in London during the 1780s. He is recognized as a skilled instrument maker, specializing in high-quality, unique wheel and stick barometers. This piece is considered a rare and unusual example, making it an excellent investment and a significant piece of history to add to your collection.
