Off-Duty EMT Who Delivered Baby Honored With Civilian Award In Plumstead

In June, the off-duty Point Pleasant-Plumsteadville EMT responded to the report of a mother in active labor.

PLUMSTEAD TOWNSHIP, PA — An off-duty medical technician with Point Pleasant-Plumsteadville EMS has been recognized by the Plumstead Township Police Department with a civilian award for her quick actions during an incident in June.

On June 12, Elizabeth Rice had just completed an overnight shift with the EMS unit when she heard the squad dispatched for the report of a woman in active labor in the parking of the Plumsteadville Pub.

Sgt. Rutecki was first to arrive on scene and noted that the woman’s water had broken and she was in labor with the baby’s head visibly crowning.

Rice heard the dispatch and responded to the location in her private vehicle and offered assistance.

At the scene, Rice assessed the situation, reassured the patient, and instructed her to push. On the second push, the baby was safely delivered.

She coordinated EMS transport for baby and mother while taking care of the infant.

"Throughout this incident, Liz demonstrated extraordinary composure, leadership and compassion," said Plumstead Police Chief David Mettin. "It is with great appreciation that we present Elizabeth Rice with this Civilian Recognition Award for her actions in assisting the Plumstead Township Police Department," said the chief. "Her assistance was critical in the successful birth of a newborn and the care of a new mother. Liz’s actions demonstrated her true professionalism, and she is a credit to our community and Pt. Pleasant–Plumsteadville EMS."
