Questions
Why are you running for school board? If elected, what will your priorities be?
I am running for school board to bring common sense and balance back to the board. With my 37 years of experience in education, I will bring my expertise, knowledge, and genuine care for all students, families, and community to the board.
If elected, I will ensure wise and efficient budgets are developed and implemented. Rising school taxes are a growing concern for our community, especially our seniors. A comprehensive review of our budget is needed with a plan for reducing costs where possible. If elected, I will strengthen the lines of communication between parents, staff, community, and the board through open dialogue and collaboration.
What do you see as the major issues facing the district and how would you address them?
Academics (proficiency levels) have slipped over the past few years in some of our schools. I would ensure the board invests in robust intervention programs for our students needing support in math or reading. In addition, I would recommend professional development for our teachers to equip them with the tools/strategies to assist our students.
Another major issue facing our district is the lack of following child abuse protocols. I would recommend a review of that process for all new employees during on-boarding as well as continous training for all existing employees.
The past few years have been turbulent in the district. How will you bring stability?
I will bring stability to our district through collaboration and open dialogue with parents, community, and staff. This can be achieved through active listening and garnering feedback from stakeholders. I plan to be visible at our community events, school events, and other venues to listen and support our students, families, and staff.
What changes should be made at the state and federal level regarding public education and what is your opinion of what is happening at the federal level with funding and educational priorities?
Ending the federal bureaucracy does not mean ending public education. It is a way to return control to parents, teachers, and local school boards. I believe in public education; it is my hope that more monies will flow directly to the states and local level. I would like to see more funding at the state level for special education students.
