DOYLESTOWN, PA — The moment thousands of Doylestown children have been awaiting for months is almost here: Kids Castle is reopening this weekend.

The beloved Doylestown playground will reopen the morning of Saturday, Nov 23. The park will reopen at sunrise, sometime around 7 a.m., Joe Salvati, the chairman of Friends of Kids Castle tells Patch.

The playground has been closed since late March for equipment installation.

During the closure, crews worked to install new play structures for children with a variety of abilities. Play features to be added include items for children with visual impairment, hearing impairment, autism/SPD, mobility impairment, and cognitive disabilities.

The Friends of Kids Castle volunteers raised more than $500,000 to make the improvements through individual donations, play equipment sponsors, local businesses, state and local grants, and in-kind donations of goods and services.

Kids Castle, located in Doylestown Township's Central Park, is an eight-story wooden playground designed and named by children through an art contest in 1996. In 1997, the Kids Castle Committee, township staff and residents met with architect Bob Leathers to work on refining the initial playground design.

A series of repairs were made in 2013 after the castle was at risk of closing. In 2014, Kids Castle was named one of the "World's Most Unbelievable Playgrounds by Red Tricycle, a digital guide for parents. "Kids Castle is a prime example of what we love about being in a loving community," the publication said.
