Hunter With Gunshot Wound Saved By Plumstead Police Officer

Officer A.J. Elkadousy was called to the area of Ferry and Tollgate roads for a report of an 80-year-old man suffering from a shotgun wound.

PLUMSTEAD TOWNSHIP, PA — A Plumstead Township police officer has received the department's Life Saving Award for rendering aid to a hunting accident victim.

The incident happened on Saturday, Jan. 4 at about 8:47 a.m. when Officer A.J. Elkadousy was called to the area of Ferry and Tollgate roads for a report of an 80-year-old man suffering from a shotgun wound to his leg.

Driving with emergency lights and siren activated, he quickly arrived at the scene and began searching for the caller.

Officer Elkadousy located two individuals who had been hunting on the property deep in a wooded area. The victim was lying on the ground with a severe, self-inflicted, accidental shotgun wound to his lower leg.

"Demonstrating outstanding composure and professionalism, Officer Elkadousy immediately assessed the severity of the victim’s injury," said Chief David A. Mettin. "Despite the challenging environment, he provided calm and compassionate reassurance to the victim while taking swift and decisive action to control the bleeding."

Officer Elkadousy applied a tourniquet to the victim’s upper leg and communicated each step to keep the victim calm and informed during the incident.

"Further showcasing his diligence and presence of mind, Officer Elkadousy promptly notified Bucks County Police Radio dispatch of the time the tourniquet was applied, ensuring that critical information was preserved for responding EMS and hospital personnel," said the chief.

The victim was flown by the Temple University Med Flight helicopter to Temple University Hospital for emergency care.

According to Chief Mettin, the department was contacted by the flight medic who credited Officer Elkadousy with saving the life of the victim by quickly and properly applying lifesaving efforts.

"Officer Elkadousy proved to be a great asset to this department, to Plumstead Township, and to the residents who we serve," said Mettin. "His quick and decisive actions in less-than-ideal conditions, saved the life of another person. It is with great honor that Officer Ahmed Elkadousy is awarded the Plumstead Township Police Department’s Life Saving award."
