WARRINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — A new ordinance has taken effect in Warrington Township designed to deter the excess use of fireworks.

Township officials passed the law in October partly in response to complaints from Bucks County residents about fireworks being set off on a nightly basis.

Under the ordinance, violators can face fines of up to $600 for each violation. The regulations also stipulate that anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited from using fireworks,.

There are some exceptions. On New Year's Eve, fireworks can be used between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m. On the four other permitted holidays, including New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, the Chinese New Year, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, fireworks can be used between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Fireworks usage ticked up nationwide around late May and especially in Pennsylvania, where the regulations are more lax than in New York and New Jersey. Some experts attributed the increase to racial justice protests, but retailers said it likely had more to do with residents coping with cabin fever during coronavirus lockdowns.
