DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Zen Den, a local favorite for coffee and companionship, will not reopen once the coronavirus shutdowns are lifted, the business' owner announced this week.

Owner Annette Coletta made the announcement in a Facebook post Thursday. In a follow up conversation with Patch, she said the coronavirus crisis was "just the straw that broke the camel's back."

In her announcement, she said after "much contemplation and a lot of soul searching," she has decided to close the doors to the coffee shop permanently.

Located on E. State Street, The Zen Den was a favorite local hangout for artists and musicians. It was the site of various live events, including cover bands and casual open mic nights.

"I have had some of the best years of my life here and made so many friends and acquaintances that I’m very grateful for having. What began as a way of coping with a personal crisis after a horrific car accident, has now ended through a global crisis," Coletta said.

She had recently been trying to sell the business and had two buyers. But both prospects ceased to be interested once the coronavirus crisis began, she told Patch. So now, she's retiring early and the shop will close.

The Zen Den first opened in 2011. In 2017, it moved to the larger location after outgrowing its smaller shop on Donaldson Street.

"I will go forward knowing that I gave it my EVERYTHING and ran an honest, ethical business for 9 years and that I did the best I could—-I have no regrets. I thank ALL of you for the privilege of occupying space in your lives, for all that you taught me, the kindnesses you’ve shown me, your patronage, and your friendship," Coletta wrote in her Facebook farewell.

She added that anyone with a gift card can email info@zendencoffeeshop.com or call 267-880-6205 to be reimbursed. She'll be selling coffee beans, ground coffee, loose leaf tea, mugs, store decor, tea pots, furniture through April 30. Those interested can contact her for details.

In less than 24 hours, Coletta received hundreds of comments on her announcement, with supporters expressing their disappointment the shop would close.
