After Fatal Fire, Easton Officials Stress Smoke Alarms

Home at 724 Spring Garden St. had no smoke alarms installed.

It was a few hours after Monday morning's deadly fire in Easton's West Ward, and there were a few neighbors gathered on a corner, waiting to go back home.

A city firefighter came up to them and asked two questions: Do you have smoke detectors in your place? Do they work?

Questions like that were on a lot of people's minds Monday after it became clear that 724 Spring Garden St., a rental property where three people lost their lives, had no smoke alarms.

Every homeowner in the city is required to install them, Easton Fire Chief John Bast said.

But if you live in a rental property, and your landlord hasn't put one in, you don't even need to worry about buying one.

"I mean, we give them away," Bast said.

The fire department will provide and even install smoke detectors for free. Just call 610-250-6672.
