Easton Officials to Rally For Immigration Reform

Easton mayor, councilmen, to call on Congress to "Act Now" on immigration bill.

Easton city officials are set to introduce a resolution this week calling on Congress to pass a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill.

Mayor Sal Panto, along with city councilmen Jeff Warren and Ken Brown, will speak in favor of the legislation at a rally Tuesday in Centre Square, according to Organizing For Action–Lehigh Valley.

If the city passed the resolution, it would join a handful of communities around the country adopting similar measures, including, Boston, San Diego, and —closer to home— Philadelphia and Norristown, PA.

The rally is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday in Centre Square. Council will introduce the resolution at its 6 p.m. budget meeting that evening.

Panto has spoken on behalf of immigration reform in the past. Earlier this year, he appeared at a rally for so-called "Dreamers," young undocumented immigrants pushing for a path to citizenship.

The immigration legislation is designed streamline the citizenship process, while also holding undocumented immigrants accountable before they could get citizenship.

It's also aimed at cracking down on companies that hire undocumented workers and adding more security to the borders.
