Food Inspector Fired for Photographing Unsafe Kitchen Conditions, According to Court Complaint

Gary Heller, of Easton, PA, says he was fired after showing photographs of food safety hazards to his manager.

An Easton health inspector was fired after he photographed the kitchen and storage area at Northampton County College, according to the Pennsylvania Record.

Inspector Gary Heller seeks compensatory damages for back pay plus interest, and his reinstatement at Bon Appetit Management Company.

According to Heller’s complaint, he worked as a supervisor for Sodexo dining services on the Lafayette College campus in Easton until June 2013, when the College traded for Bon Appetit’s dining services. Heller stayed with the company and monitored food safety practices.

Heller found infractions including dirty coolers, uncovered, unlabeled and undated food, raw products stored over cooked products, onions stored on the floor, rotting fruit and more.

The complaint says that Heller sent these photos to his direct managers and was suspended from his duties five days later. Bon Appetit claims that Heller showed photos with outside parties.
