Police Say Chased Man Killed Himself, Did Not Die From Gunshot Wound

Police shot Richard Scheuermann after a chase across three townships. Police report he died at his own hand. The investigation is ongoing.

The 39 year old Wilson man was not killed by police gunfire but from slitting his own throat, according to the Morning Call.

After a police pursuit that began in Palmer Township and reached into Wilson Borough,Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, and finally to Easton, the driver, Richard Scheuermann III in a red Ford F350 pickup truck was shot by a police officer, Lehigh Valley Live reported.

An officer tried to pull Scheuermann over for driving on the wrong side of a road in Palmer Township, suspecting he was drunk. That led to a chase through several municipalities, authorities said.

His cause of death was found in an investigation as to whether the two officers who shot Richard Scheuermann III in Easton were justified in using deadly force and whether the gunfire is what killed him, District Attorney John Morganelli said.

The investigation is ongoing.
