Samuel Moon Remembered at Sigal

If you were a prominent Eastonian in the 19th century, you went to Samuel Moon.

Moon set up an art studio in Easton in 1830, and spent the next 30 years painting portraits of well-to-do families from the city.

For the next 10 weeks, the Sigal Museum will pay tribute to Moon with "Many Moons Remembered," an exhibit of 26 of his portraits.

"While many of these portraits are striking representations of the subject, for some the stories behind the portraits tell of sad circumstances," the museum said in a news release.

The pictures often show subjects who died young, such as Minnie Bercaw, who succumbed to scarlet fever at age six.

The exhibit opens Sunday, with a reception from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and a program by Melissa Hough “Self-taught Artist: Samuel Moon”.

On April 7 Tom Burke will discuss how he cleaned and prepared the pictures for exhibition. The exhibit runs until May 31.
