Edgewood Council Honors Dick Lithgow, Longtime Pharmacist and Firefighter
Council issued a proclamation in honor of the late Edgewood resident who volunteered with different community organizations.
Edgewood Council named this Thursday “Dick Lithgow Day” in honor of the longtime Edgewood pharmacist and volunteer firefighter who died March 22.
His daughter, Susan Lithgow of Edgewood, attended the meeting to accept a certificate and listen to the proclamation made in honor of her father.
“I just want to thank you all for honoring my father in that way,” Lithgow said. “I just ask that you remember my father in laughter and humor and not in sadness because he wouldn’t want it that way.”

Mayor Mal Hellett read the proclamation at council’s regular meeting Monday.
“Whereas, Dick Lithgow embodied what is best about volunteers in seeing a need and filling it without any fanfare or fuss, and when poor health prevented him from continuing to fight fires, he stepped into an administrative role in the department,” Hellett said. “Throughout the years, he had been the president, vice president and secretary.”

Lithgow also was a Little League coach and volunteered as a member of the Edgewood Activities Association.”
Also during the meeting, former Edgewood Mayor Ruth McGregor read a letter she recently sent to Police Chief Robert Payne as she donated her late husband’s flags to the borough. James McGregor was a U.S. Court of Common Pleas judge.
“It is my pleasure to present to the Edgewood Police Department the American flag and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania flags that were in my late husband’s courtroom in the Court of Common Pleas,” she said. “These flags are presented in honor of the police department and in honor and the memory of Judge McGregor, Sr., a 40-year resident of Edgewood borough.”
In other news, council approved a $7,650 contract for Soli Construction, Inc. The company will repair sewer problems on East Hutchinson Avenue in the borough.
