Urban Garden Walk Grows New Perspective on Hunger

Waverly Presbyterian hosts walk through Abundant Hope program.

held an urban garden walk Monday afternoon as a part of its  program this week, which addresses the issues of hunger.

Led by Karen Sloan of Point Breeze, a church associate, the group of youth and adults gathered in the church foyer for prayer and a song before venturing through Frick Park and to urban gardens created by Grow Pittsburgh, an organization focused on local food and sustainability.

"One of the simplest things we can do is grow a vegetable garden," Sloan said. "We thought it'd be fun to see several places where folks are growing food."

Sloan also discussed the importance of urban gardens in city neighborhoods where supermarkets may not be closeby.

"The sooner you eat something after it is picked, the more nutrition it has for you," she said.
