Word of God Finishes Recycle Rally

Local students and neighbors collected recyclable items for a national contest.

Word of God School unofficially took 17th place in the , even with a late start and competition that included more than 400 schools across the nation.

Maggie Sabol, a local mother of students at the school, applied for a spot in October for Word of God in the competition. The Dream Machine Recycle Rally contest is sponsored by Waste Management and PepsiCo.

“We did get a letter thanking us for our participation and how well we did,” she said. “On the leader board on Dream Machine Recycle Rally’s website, we placed 17th.”

Sabol said she is happy about the results even though the school didn’t win first place.

“We started two months late and I think it’s remarkable,” Sabol said. “We did recycle a lot of stuff. It’s great for the kids to see all that recycling being done and some of the proceeds from the project go to post-9/11 veterans. A lot of good came out of it even though we didn’t win the $100,000 grand prize.”

Sabol also said she is happy for the grand-prize winners.

“A school in Chicago won and they should have won because they really kicked butt,” she said. “They must have had the support of the entire city.”

Sabol said she will continue to pursue projects for the school like this in the future as long as she finds the local support to make it happen.

“People really got excited about it as the contest went on,” she said.

For every item collected and recycled, the school received one point. Word of God can cash in those points at Greenopolis.com, where the school can earn money for products from local businesses, including sporting goods, Sabol said.

“It felt really great,” she said of the experience. “I am very proud of the kids at the school and the community for being enthusiastic about it, doing good for the environment and making an effort to help in a contest.”
