Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Harrisburg so special.

Harrisburg is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Harrisburg has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Harrisburg is also home to one of the largest and most ornate state capitols in the United States. The Pennsylvania Capitol features a stunning interior dome made of 24-karat gold leaf and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and fountains.
- If you're a foodie, Harrisburg has plenty of delicious eats to offer, from traditional Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine to trendy restaurants and breweries. Check out the Broad Street Market, the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in the country, for a taste of the local flavors.
- For art lovers, the Susquehanna Art Museum is a must-visit destination. This contemporary art museum features rotating exhibits, as well as a permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art.
- Harrisburg is also rich in history, with numerous museums and historical sites to explore. Visit The National Civil War Museum, which tells the story of the Civil War from both Union and Confederate perspectives, or the Fort Hunter Mansion and Park, which dates back to the 1700s.
- The city's annual Kipona Festival, held over Labor Day weekend, is a celebration of the Susquehanna River. The festival includes live music, food vendors and water sports competitions.
- The Harrisburg Senators, the city's minor league baseball team, play at FNB Field, which offers stunning views of the Susquehanna River. Catch a game and enjoy a hot dog and a cold beverage while taking in the scenery.
- If you're looking for a unique outdoor experience, check out City Island, a 63-acre island in the middle of the Susquehanna River. The island is home to FNB Field, mini golf, a carousel and other fun attractions.
- For a taste of local culture, visit the Gamut Theatre Group, which offers year-round productions of classic plays and new works. The theater is located in a historic building in downtown Harrisburg.
- Harrisburg is home to the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum. The museum showcases the history of firefighting in the state and features vintage fire trucks and equipment.
- The State Museum of Pennsylvania, located in downtown Harrisburg, features exhibits on the state's natural history, art and culture. Be sure to check out the famous Mastodon skeleton on display.
- The Susquehanna River is a popular spot for outdoor recreation, including kayaking, fishing and hiking. There are several parks and trails along the river, such as the Capital Area Greenbelt and Wildwood Park.
- The John Harris – Simon Cameron Mansion, located in downtown Harrisburg, is a historic home that dates back to the 18th century. Take a guided tour and learn about the family that helped shape the city's early history.
- Harrisburg is known for its vibrant arts scene, with several theaters, galleries and music venues. Catch a show at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts or the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.
- For beer lovers, Harrisburg is home to several breweries and brewpubs, such as Appalachian Brewing Company and Zeroday Brewing Co. Take a tour and sample some of the local brews.
- The PA Farm Show is held every January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg. It is one of the largest indoor agricultural expos in the country. Check out the exhibits, livestock competitions and food vendors.
- Harrisburg is also home to several historic cemeteries, such as Harrisburg Cemetery and Paxtang Cemetery. Take a stroll and discover the stories of the city's early residents.
