Hazleton JROTC advances to Round Two of National Leadership and Academic Bowl (fox56.com) — Hazleton Area High School’s JROTC cadets are heading to Round Two of the National Leadership and Academic Bowl this February after outperforming 159 schools in the first round. Students say the young program has become a tight-knit family, building leadership, discipline, and confidence while they also prepare for busy drill and color guard competitions.

LVH-Hazleton addresses business community at chamber breakfast (centredaily.com) — Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton leaders just briefed Greater Hazleton’s business community on recent health needs findings and major upgrades at the local campus. They highlighted improved student mental health, expanded bilingual services, a new pediatric rehab center on North Sherman Court, and new technology like AI note-taking and firearm-detecting K-9s, all aimed at strengthening care for Hazleton-area children and families.

Hazleton menorah lighting becomes a stand for religious freedom after overseas attack (centredaily.com) — Hazleton residents gathered at City Hall for a public menorah lighting that doubled as a defiant stand for religious freedom after a deadly Hanukkah attack in Sydney. Rabbi Hillel Greenberg urged the community not to hide their faith, as police stood watch and participants shared songs, donuts, and reflections on resisting fear and hatred.

West Hazleton man arrested on drug charges (centredaily.com) — A 31-year-old Hazleton man was arrested after a months-long investigation into cocaine distribution in both Hazleton and West Hazleton, with police seizing more than 300 grams of cocaine and over $24,000. He was taken into custody with help from state narcotics investigators, the Luzerne County Drug Task Force, and Hazleton Police, and is jailed on $50,000 bail.
   

5. How a Major Voting Rights Case Before the U.S. Supreme Court Might Impact Pa.'s Minority Voters (gantnews.com) — A pending U.S. Supreme Court case on the Voting Rights Act could affect an ongoing lawsuit over how Hazleton Area School District elects its board, where Hispanic voters allege their voting strength is diluted. Legal experts say Pennsylvania’s current maps likely won’t change immediately, but future redistricting and local cases, including in the Hazleton area, may become harder to pursue if federal protections are weakened.
