Market chairperson Shelley Goldberg explained the genesis of Cabbage Fest in an email:
"It all came about when i purchased a head of cabbage last year at the market and decided to make my aunt's stuffed cabbage recipe. I made so much that i ended up sharing it with friends and neighbors, and in return I received their favorite cabbage dish."

"Each one was very different and delicious," she added.
Goldberg said that another motivation behind the creation of an entire one-day festival devoted to cabbage "was to create awareness that in this economy one can purchase a large head of cabbage for $1.50 and create an abundant, healthy, delicious and nutritious meal."
Cabbage also lends itself to a variety of culinary applications, including both savory and sweet, Goldberg noted.
Applications for the festival highlight--a cabbage recipe contest that will be judged by visitors--are available at the market on Sundays from 9am to 1pm or by emailing Goldberg at sgold1111@aol.com.
The contest is free to enter, and tickets to taste (and judge) the entries will be $3 per person.
