Kennel for Stray Dogs to Be Built by Township

Lower Saucon Township Council approved a motion Wednesday to hire a canine control officer and construct a holding pen for stray dogs next to the public works building.

Due to logistical concerns, Lower Saucon Township is abandoning its relationship with the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, the Morning Call reported last week.

In an article published Thursday, the newspaper reported that township council unanimously approved a motion to hire a dog control officer at a cost of $2,500 per year and build a temporary holding facility for stray dogs next to the public works building.

The no-kill Center for Animal Health and Welfare has long been the de facto repository for stray dogs found wandering in Lower Saucon Township, but the consequences of frequent overcrowding have strained the relationship between the center—formerly the Northampton County SPCA—and the township in recent years.
